Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body needs to perform basic functions while at rest.

These basic functions include;

BMR is also known as Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). It is a major source of energy for your body, accounting for 60% to 70% of your total energy use.

You can use BMR to help you gain or lose weight;

2.1 Gain Weight

Consuming more kilocalories in a day than your BMR can cause you to gain weight

2.2 Lose Weight

Eating fewer kilocalories than your BMR requires is likely to cause you to lose weight.

3. BMR Calculation

There are two different ways by which BMR can be calculated and the basic difference is about the gender for whom we are calculating the BMR.

3.1 BMR Calculation for Men

BMR = (10 * Weight in kg) + (6.25 * Height in cm) - (5 * Age in years) + 5

3.1 BMR Calculation for Women

BMR = (10 * Weight in kg) + (6.25 * Height in cm) - (5 * Age in years) - 161
